Moranbah East State School Grade 6 students converted the Barada Barna story of Bunju and Gandu Go Walkabout into an augmented reality experience in a unique exhibition.

Held at Isaacs premier art space, the Coalface Art Gallery, the exhibition will showcase photos of the creation process, the original clay figures used to create the 3D images and QR codes as gateways to the Augmented Reality experience.

The story of an old man (Bunja) and a young boy (Gandu) going walkabout and passing on traditional culture and lore was told to the Grade 6 class by Barada Barna chairwoman, Luarna Walsh.

“It was a great opportunity to tell this story to the students and teach them the traditional words of the animals we share the country with,” Luarna said.

“The story of Bunju and Gandu can be seen in 3D through using the Indigital Storytelling app which was specifically designed to use digital technology for sharing indigenous stories and culture with future generations.”

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said the new exhibition was a unique and fun way to experience the Barada Barna story.

“In this exhibition you get to see the process the students took to create the 3D world, from the creation of the clay models to the digitalisation of the environments,” Mayor Baker said.

“Once you generate the 3D worlds by using the QR codes you and your friends can become a part of the exhibition, as you use your phones to navigate the environments or even hold them in the palm of your hand.

“I would like to congratulate the Moranbah East State School Grade 6 class on their work literally bringing the Barada Barna story to life. This is one of the most exciting exhibitions we have ever had and it fills me with joy to see young students learning about the culture and lore of our Traditional Owners.”

The Bunju and Gandu Go Walkabout Exhibition will run from 14 November to 17 December at the Coalface Art Gallery, Monday to Friday between 8.30am to 5pm.

Download the free Indigital Storytelling app to view the augmented reality environments. Available on the App Store and Google Play.
