Garage Sale Trail round two kicks off
City of Fremantle 19 Nov 2021

Don’t stress if you missed last weekend’s launch of the Garage Sale Trail, as round two is kicking off tomorrow.

With stacks of garage sales happening around the City of Fremantle, it’s the perfect time to tick off your Christmas shopping list.

You’ll find quality pre-loved gifts that are kind on the planet and your pocket, with Australia’s largest sustainability and community festival.

The City’s Sustainability Senior Project Officer Annabelle McGuiness said this year’s Garage Sale Trail was another popular return for Freo.

“We’re thrilled to be part of the Garage Sale Trail for another year, as it continues to encourage residents to shop local as well as recycle – it’s about encouraging that Circular Economy,” she said.

“It’s never been easier for Freo residents to get involved in this great event; you’ll be saying ‘thanks it’s thrifted’ to people in no time.

“The Garage Sale Trail continues to be popular with our residents as it embodies the ethos of reuse and recycle and enables people to find hidden treasures in their own backyard – the best bit is that it doesn't cost the earth.”

Owner of the Picker Concept vintage store, and all-around second-hand connoisseur, Gabby Nuich said events such as Garage Sale Trail were a great way to create a sustainable community.

“The Garage Sale Trail creates such a great community; I’ve made friends from my first trail sale who still shop with me now eight years later,” she said.

“In the next few years, the second-hand market is said to overtake the fast fashion market in terms of profits and the economy – it goes to show that we see the value of sustainability over aesthetic.

“There’s been such a huge push coming from younger Australians because they are really concerned about a sustainable environment – it’s so nice to see that so many people are seeing the value in made to last second-hand goods that transcend trends.”

Last year over 2000 Freo residents participated as sellers, shoppers, or attended the online workshop, with an estimated weight of 14,889kg in items reused locally.

This year residents are encouraged to upload pictures showing off their best thrifted finds with the hashtag #thanksitsthrifted for the chance to win one of four $250 prizes.
