The City of Wanneroo will welcome the Australian Air Force Cadets of 704 Squadron and 721 Squadron to exercise the right to Freedom of Entry to the City on 28 November 2021.

The Air Force Cadets will mark the occasion with a formal parade, a ceremonial signing of the Freedom of Entry scroll and a military flyover from the 79 Squadron of RAAF Base Pearce.

Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the event is a reflection of the special bond between the City and the local Australian Air Force Cadets of 704 Squadron and 721 Squadron.

“The City’s connection with the Air Force Cadets dates back to 1986, when a squadron was first established in Wanneroo,” she said.

“Since then, the Australian Air Force Cadets have been an enduring feature of life in the City and have repeatedly demonstrated positive values and a commitment to supporting young people to become responsible adults.”

Granting Freedom of Entry to a military unit is a symbolic honour dating back to medieval times that gives the right of general entry to the unit to march in the City on ceremonial occasions.

The City of Wanneroo is one of only a few local governments in Western Australia to have granted Freedom of Entry to a military unit.

“As Mayor it was my absolute pleasure to grant the prestigious Freedom of Entry privilege to the Australian Air Force Cadets of 704 Squadron and 721 Squadron in 2016,” Mayor Roberts said.

“It is a great privilege to have the Air Force Cadets exercise their right to Freedom of Entry in the City of Wanneroo, so that we can continue to honour this distinguished youth program and further strengthen the ties between the community and our servicemen and women.”

Members of the public are encouraged to attend this very symbolic occasion.
