Construction of the Gannawarra’s first Changing Places facility and the municipality’s third all abilities play space will begin in early 2022 after Gannawarra Shire Council awarded the tender for the transformational project.
CJ & BT McLoughlan will oversee the construction of the Kerang All Abilities Play Space and Changing Places facility, to be located at Atkinson Park, after being awarded the tender for the $1.1 million project.
“The Kerang All Abilities Play Space and Changing Places facility will enhance the popularity and accessibility of the Sir John Gorton Precinct, which includes Atkinson Park, the Sir John Gorton Library and Kerang Swimming Pool,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.
“This project, supported by a $1 million contribution from the State Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program, builds on all abilities play space developments completed or currently being constructed at Koondrook and Cohuna.”
The major feature of the project is the construction of an all abilities play space within the current playground, and adjacent to the fire brigade training track and soundshell located within Atkinson Park.
“Featuring in-ground trampolines, a log scramble area, water play areas and a wheelchair accessible sway fun swing, the Kerang All Abilities Play Space will encourage greater socialisation and physical activity for the local community and regional visitors.” Mayor Gillingham said.
The project also involves the construction of the first Changing Places facility in the municipality. Featuring a height-adjustable adult-sized change table, ceiling track hoist system and a peninsular-structured toilet, the space will provide suitable facilities for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.
“Although there are currently 183 Changing Places facilities located nationally, the Atkinson Park facility will be the first located in northwestern Victoria,” Mayor Gillingham said.
“This new facility will enable people to participate more fully in activities and events, and gives families the chance to participate in a family outing, without anyone being excluded.
“These works also include adding a unisex shower and sheltered rest area to the current amenities block, which will enhance facilities currently available to visitors passing through Kerang.”
Council will keep residents updated regarding the construction of the Kerang All Abilities Play Space and Changing Places facility via its website, Facebook page, Gannawarra News and Gannawarra Connect.
