Yarra’s Councillors have elected Cr Sophie Wade as Mayor and Cr Edward Crossland as Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months.
The election took place at a ceremonial council meeting last night.
A resident of Collingwood and lawyer, Cr Wade said she was looking forward to working alongside all of her fellow Councillors, officers and the community to achieve great outcomes for the people of Yarra.
She said she felt “incredibly lucky” to live in Yarra and honoured to be entrusted with the responsibility of being Mayor.
“There is no doubt that Yarra is facing its challenges, particularly as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. but I think we are well placed to tackle these challenges together.”
“I am immensely proud of the way we stepped up when our community needed us most. We were agile and responsive. I am committed to making further strides forward as we address the climate emergency, inequality and recover from the pandemic.”
“I will work hard to protect what our community loves about Yarra. I have a passion for making sure everyone can be involved in making our community even better.”
“It’s been an absolute pleasure and privilege to serve as a Councillor this past year and I am really looking forward to leading Yarra as its Mayor for the next 12 months.”
