A new documentary is showcasing the success of a community active ageing program and sharing the stories of seniors who have participated from across the Great Southern region.
After two years and 42,286 individual workouts, the results of the Long Live You program delivered by the City of Albany, Shire of Denmark and Shire of Plantagenet has exceeded expectations.
Supported by Sport Australia, Live Lighter, Healthway, and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the program launched in 2019 with the goal of improving the fitness and lifestyles of people aged 65 years and over.
The response was overwhelming and the benefits enjoyed by Long Live You members went far beyond just participating in regular exercise.
The 20-minute documentary will explore how the program has promoted positive change and improved the health, wellbeing and social connection for seniors involved.
With more than 3,400 individual program enrolments, 97.2 per cent of participants reported an increase in their activity levels and 113 people were introduced to a local sporting club.
City of Albany Manager Recreation Services Mitch Green said the results were incredibly rewarding.
“The Long Live You members have been really passionate and committed to the program because they have experienced the results and seen positive changes in themselves and others,” he said.
“Around 45 per cent of the combined Albany, Denmark and Plantagenet population are over 50 years of age so having programs like this ensures these members of our community have opportunities to remain active, enjoy companionship and stay connected to their community as they age.”
Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre (ALAC) Commercial Services Coordinator John Pouwelsen said the program adopted a ‘one size doesn’t fit all’ approach.
“Whether it is a walking group, chair yoga, Zumba or beginner strong seniors, our instructors tailor the class for the individual participants to ensure everyone can take part,” he said.
“Long Live You isn’t about being the fastest or the fittest. It is about turning up and activating your mind and body and we are really looking forward to continuing the program at ALAC next year.”
