West Tamar 2022 Youth Mayor Announced

FROM:

Mayor, Christina Holmdahl

DATE:

Tuesday 7th December 2021

The West Tamar Youth Mayor Program selects a student from year 7-9 to represent the youth of the West Tamar municipality for one year, providing a focus for their views to be heard by the West Tamar Council.

As the 2021 inaugural Youth Mayor Chloe White ends her term, West Tamar Council Mayor Christina Holmdahl is pleased to announce that our 2022 Youth Mayor is Elizabeth Sexton.

Ms Sexton, who will be in year 9 at Launceston Christian School when she serves her term during 2022, believes she can make a difference and positively impact our community.

“I want to act upon what is right, not just talk about it. As Youth Mayor, I will help to secure a good future for everyone, youthful and elderly,” Ms Sexton said.

“I want to engage the youth in their local community and give them a voice in decisions that will ultimately affect them and their families, now and in the future”.

The West Tamar Youth Mayor’s role is to recognise the importance of helping better represent young people in the West Tamar, by speaking on behalf of their needs and identifying opportunities to effectively work towards empowering local young people. The role came about from the 2020-2022 West Tamar Youth Strategy which identified empowering young people with skills and confidence in our municipality as one of its goals.

“While we have always encouraged West Tamar youth to let us know what they want for our community, the Youth Mayor helps to streamline this communication by including young people in Council’s decision making process, providing a stronger youth voice in the local community and increasing their understanding of the roles and functions of Local Government,” Mayor Christina Holmdahl said.

“After a successful year working with Chloe White, I look forward to seeing Elizabeth grow in this role as she assists me in formal Council duties, as well as hearing her thoughts and suggestions on improving life for young people in the West Tamar.”
