As sustainability issues are increasingly front and centre of public concern about the future, there is now very strong interest in what institutions are doing to reduce their environmental footprint.
One way of gauging how well companies and institutions are performing is through environmental disclosure reporting.
Northern Beaches Council recently completed environmental disclosure reporting through the global disclosure rating agency, CDP, for the first time in 2021 and was awarded an overall score in the highest band possible for a city or region, the “Leadership Band”.
CDP is a not-for-profit charity which runs a global disclosure system for companies, cities, states and regions to help manage their environmental impact.
965 cities around the world completed CDP reporting in 2021. Council's overall score within the Leadership Band of A- puts us in the top 14 within our Oceania region.
With an A- score, CDP said Council had demonstrated best practice standards across adaptation (the process of preparing for, and adjusting proactively to, climate change) and mitigation (the process by which cities reduce emissions and transform to a low-carbon economy).
Council scored A- for both adaptation and mitigation subsets also, which for adaptation rates higher than the regional average of B, and higher than the global average of D. For mitigation, it rates higher than the regional average of C, and higher than the global average of D.
CDP said Council had set ambitious but realistic goals and made progress towards achieving those goals.
"Your city has strategic, holistic plans in place to ensure the actions being taken will reduce climate impacts and vulnerabilities of the citizens, businesses and organizations residing in your city."
Council is committed to taking action on climate change and moving towards our net zero target. You can read more about our targets and actions on our website.
We are working hard as an organisation, and as a community to protect and take care of our environment for future generations.
