If you’re tired of watching waste piling up at home or need that extra storage space in time for Christmas, avoid the rush and book Council’s on-call hard waste collection service.
Council’s on-call hard waste collection is a waste disposal and recycling service for items that are too large to dispose of through your regular household waste bin.
Maroondah Mayor and Council’s representative on the Metropolitan Local Government Waste Forum, Cr Mike Symon, said that due to demand this time of year and a limited number of booking spots available, residents would need to book their pre-Christmas collection early to avoid missing out.
“Council is working hard to reduce waste. We are doing this by making it easier for you to recycle, prevent organic waste going into the bin, and diverting e-waste, hard rubbish and chemicals from landfill,” Cr Symon said.
Maroondah residents who pay a residential bin charge are entitled to two pre-booked hard waste collections per financial year. You can choose from two single collections or one double collection. It’s also free to book the service, with the cost covered by municipal waste charges.
The last day to make an online booking before Christmas is by 8pm Thursday 16 December. Bookings made over the phone (1300 88 22 33), via live chat or in person must be made by no later than midday on Friday 17 December.
Hard waste bookings can still be made via live chat, over the phone or in person for collection during the Christmas and New Year period, however there will be a limited number of collections during this time and no collections taking place the week of Monday 27 December.
Bookings must be made before placing your waste on the nature strip. Please ensure waste is not placed out any earlier than the weekend before a scheduled collection. Once your booking is made, you will be notified of your collection week and when to put your hard waste out.
Residents are reminded to stick to the collection size limits. Excess material will not be collected and must be removed from the nature strip as soon as possible.
Householders are also reminded that there are rules as to what is suitable for collection. See our On-call hard rubbish collection page for all the do’s and don’ts.
“Before you place your hard waste out for collection, please consider if any items are still in good, working condition and could be reused. There are various recycling groups and organisations who are happy to take items in working condition. You might want to check to see who is currently accepting donations,” Cr Symon said.
Hard waste collection tips: Please keep your pile neat and tidy and only place acceptable materials out for collection.
