Fremantle council will hold its first meeting in the new Walyalup Civic Centre tomorrow night.
Respected Nyoongar Elder Auntie Marie Taylor has been invited to provide a Welcome to Country at the opening of the meeting.
Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said the first council meeting in the Walyalup Civic Centre would a momentous occasion for Fremantle.
“The council chamber is a really important part of the Walyalup Civic Centre because it’s where our local democracy gets played out,” Mayor Fitzhardinge said.
“I really love that the chamber is visible from the street. Anyone who’s walking through Walyalup Koort will be able to see the council at work, or even walk up the steps and come right in.
“It’s designed to be a symbol of openness and transparency, and that local government is accessible to everyone.
“The oval shape of the chamber is an architectural feature that’s echoed on every level of the Walyalup Civic Centre, from the library on the lower ground floor, through the council chamber and right up to the upper floors.
“The chamber itself is beautifully finished with sustainably sourced Australian blackbutt, which has a lovely golden colour and makes the room feel intimate even though it’s quite a large space.
“There are two big screens at each end of the chamber to display meeting agendas, while the audio system will be a vast improvement and make it lot easier for people to hear the debate and follow along with what’s happening.
“All of the council furniture can also be packed away, which makes it a very flexible space that can be used for occasions like Citizenship Ceremonies and other important council and community events.”
The first Ordinary Meeting of Fremantle Council at the Walyalup Civic Centre will be held tomorrow 15 December, commencing at 6pm.
Direct access to the council chamber is available using the steps from Walyalup Koort, or via the elevator in the Walyalup Civic Centre foyer.
Live streaming of council meetings is not yet available, but will be in the near future.
