South Golden Beach gets new roads for Christmas

Published on 15 December 2021

Byron Shire Council is renewing eight roads in South Golden Beach, weather elves permitting.  The works are part of Council’s delivery of a smooth, new road network across the Byron Shire under the NSW Government’s $25 million Roads and Infrastructure Election commitment funding.

On the list for an upgrade before Christmas are: Helen St, Robin St, Gloria St, Peter St, Royal St, Redgate Rd, Elizabeth St, Jack Lane and Clifford St.

Redgate Road will also be renewed, thanks to funding from the NSW Government’s Fixing Local Roads program.

“The technique we use for these renewals will improve the shape, drainage and durability of the road, replacing the old, damaged bitumen seal with new asphalt surface.

It will reduce future pot hole patching and save hundreds of thousands of ratepayer dollars that would have been spent on short-term fixes and maintenance in the past,” Council’s Operations Coordinator, Anthony Boyle said.

“Along with the roadworks, we are also continuing to roll out drainage improvements with the completion of Clifford St scheduled for this financial year, and Gloria St to be done the following year,” he said.

“We’ll also be resurfacing the cycle track from the skatepark to New Brighton Road, along Redgate Road.”

“You can expect to see our crews out in force every dry day between now and Christmas and traffic management will be in place as we move along these streets,” Mr Boyle said.

Local Nationals Member of the Legislative Council, Ben Franklin said these projects will make a big difference to the local road network and it’s great to see work underway.

“The community wants good, safe roads to drive on every day, whether that be to work, school or to the shops,” Mr Franklin said.

“This funding, from both the Fixing Local Roads Program and the $25 million that I delivered for Byron Shire, will mean the community can drive with more confidence every time they get behind the wheel.”
