Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) will investigate the feasibility of supplying water to growing urban areas at Westbrook and Drayton, as well as southern Toowoomba Region townships.
A report detailing the staged planning, budgeting and scheduling required for an urban trunk water supply to service Westbrook and Drayton and the townships of Cambooya, Greenmount, Nobby and Clifton will be prepared for Council’s consideration. Council’s December Ordinary Meeting this week (December 14) approved the investigation.
TRC Planning and Development Committee chair Cr Megan O’Hara Sullivan, who moved the motion, said the information would help Council to implement its long-term growth plans.
“This information will give greater confidence to the development industry and residents who will be looking for new housing opportunities in these areas.” Cr O’Hara Sullivan said.
“The roll-out of essential urban infrastructure, such as water, wastewater, drainage, parks and roads, is an important part of servicing our growing Region.
“Council is reviewing the growth fronts across the Region and is incorporating data about future population and jobs growth in our Growth Plan, which is being drafted as part of our long-term strategic planning.
“Our infrastructure planning will reflect the projected growth for the next 10 to 15 years, including the growth that is forecast for our southern areas. While the infrastructure for the northern areas is mostly in place, there are opportunities to extend the trunk water supply to our southern growth areas.”
TRC Water and Waste Committee chair Cr Rebecca Vonhoff, who seconded the motion, said it was important to note the planning and eventual delivery of a water supply would be staged over several years.
“We know our southern communities need water supply solutions.
“Council can’t keep waiting for the state government to commit to a proposed southern pipeline to Warwick.
“Recent rain has changed the water supply situation for the Southern Downs drastically and we need to progress plans for our residents.
“This proposal will not only offer an urban supply to southern area residents, but will deliver better quality water to residents, especially at Greenmount.”
