City receives funding for bushfire mitigation

This funding will support the City’s vital bushfire mitigation activities including building firebreaks, hazard reduction burns, and chemical treatments to minimise the potential risks of fires in City parks and reserves.

Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the City was pleased to have received the funding to undertake these essential mitigation activities.

“Over 90 per cent of the City of Wanneroo is bushfire prone, with an abundance of rural areas, bushland and coastal scrub,” she said.

“Over the past few years, we have experienced the devastating impact bushfires can have firsthand over the last few years and we are so grateful for our fantastic local volunteer firefighters who work tirelessly to keep us safe.

“It is very important that as a community we do everything we possibly can to reduce the risk of bushfire within the City.”

City of Wanneroo Chief Bush Fire Control Officer, Tyron McMahon, said that the wet conditions over the last few months had caused higher than usual fuel loads.

“All of the extra rain we experienced throughout spring has seen grass and shrubs grow in abundance. As we move into summer, we will see this overgrowth dry out, creating ideal conditions for fires to ignite and spread quickly,” he said.

"Landowners are encouraged to get their properties prepared now for the warmer months by pruning overgrown shrubs, clearing gutters and keeping grass cut to 10cm or less.

“I would also encourage residents to make sure they are well informed about what actions they need to take, both in preparation for and in the event of a bushfire.”
