Michael Lyon has been declared the Mayor of the Byron Shire Council two weeks after the NSW Local Government elections were held.

The NSW Electoral Commission made the announcement at the Mullumbimby Civic Hall today (20 December 2021) with Mayor Lyon winning 54.32 percent of the vote after the distribution of preferences.

“It’s a real honour to be elected and I thank the Byron Shire community for giving me the opportunity to serve as mayor.

“People have recognised that having continuity is important, as is the delivery on the core business of council and community infrastructure such as roads, footpaths, cycle ways and playgrounds.

“I am really looking forward to the announcement of the Councillors which will be made this Wednesday,” Mayor Lyon said.

It will be Mayor Lyon’s second term on the Byron Shire Council.

“There will be some new faces on Council and, regardless of politics, I know that we will be united in doing the absolute best to make sound decisions on behalf of our community.

“I campaigned strongly on improving the availability of housing and I know this was important to all the candidates so I have no doubt housing affordability will be the first priority for the new Council,” he said.

The first meeting of the new Byron Shire Council will be held on 20 January 2022.
