Smart Bin trial underway

Gannawarra Shire Council is participating in a three-month Loddon Mallee Waste and Resource Recovery Group smart bin trial, occurring at Cohuna’s Apex Park and Kerang’s Atkinson Park.

Installed before Christmas, the new bins feature inbuilt compacting system, which enables the devices to hold eight times more waste than conventional bins.

“Council is pleased to be participating in this three-month trial, which enables us to assess the benefits of using new technology to manage waste collection in public spaces,” Acting Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

“The trial began at a perfect time for the Gannawarra, with Apex Park and Atkinson Park popular locations for residents and visitors to gather for New Year’s Eve celebrations and during the Christmas break.”

The smart bins, which are powered by solar panels, feature self-compacting technology that enables the devices to hold more waste than conventional bins used across the municipality.

The smart bins also boast real-time data collection, enabling Council to monitor the volume of waste in each bin and when it needs to be emptied.

“These bins are similar to ones used in places such as Adelaide, Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Launceston, which have helped these councils reduce visible waste and the costs associated with emptying bins,” Mr Rollinson said.

“Council thanks the Loddon Mallee Waste and Resource Recovery Group for overseeing the smart bin trial and looks forward to analysing the outcome of the trial following its completion at the end of February.”
