The transformation of Murrabit’s stormwater network from an open drain to an underground drainage infrastructure system will continue throughout the first half of 2022.
Work on the $1.1 million Murrabit Stormwater Project, funded by the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, began in September in 2021, focusing on Browning Avenue.
“Residents who live in the areas where works have been completed are already benefiting from the improvements, which has removed deep spoon drains that are conducive to disease-carrying mosquitos during the warmer months of the year,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.
Improvements will continue in the coming months, with the project boosted by the third round of the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
“Council will allocate some of the $2.636 million received from this valuable program to complete Stages 5 and 6 of this valuable project,” Mr O’Reilly said.
“These works will benefit residents living in Church, Laursen and Whiter streets, as well as the Murrabit Market site, which will futureproof the town’s stormwater network.
“Council thanks the Federal Government, and in particular Anne Webster, Federal Member for Mallee, for supporting this project and looks forward to working with the Murrabit community in implementing these improvements.”
Council will continue to keep residents updated regarding the Murrabit Stormwater Project via its website, Facebook page, Gannawarra News and Gannawarra Connect.
