Clear out your clutter and reduce waste to landfill this February

Don’t ‘waste’ the opportunity to get rid of the bulky unused items around your home at the City of Wanneroo’s community waste drop-off weekend on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 February 2022.

You can get rid of a range of items that will be re-used, recycled or disposed of responsibly, including tyres, clothing, e-waste, bulk cardboard and polystyrene.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the drop-off weekend was part of the City’s commitment to reducing waste to landfill and combating illegal dumping.

“Through last year’s Community waste drop off day, we collected 974 tyres, 7.7 tonnes of e-waste, 4.6 tonnes of clothing and textiles and 2.9 tonnes of cardboard – all in one day,” she said.

“We know that our residents care for the environment and want to protect it for current and future generations. With the City’s current population of 216,000 people set to almost double by 2041, we need to act now for an environmentally sustainable and healthy future.

“I encourage everyone to drop off items you should not put in your household bins so that they can be disposed of correctly or given new life.”

The Community waste drop off weekend aims to be a COVID-safe environment. All community members who attend must observe current State Government measures and practise physical distancing where possible.

Tyres

Tyre drop off is only available to City of Wanneroo and City of Joondalup residents. You must show your driver’s licence or rates notice at drop-off.

There is a maximum of 4 tyres per household. Only motorcycle, passenger vehicle and 4x4 tyres are able to be dropped off. Commercial tyres will not be accepted. 

Clothing

Several registered charity organisations will be on site to collect unwanted clothing that will be sold through the charities’ retail outlets or sent overseas to people in need.

Items that will be accepted include clothing, textiles, manchester, bedding, towels and shoes.

E-Waste

Electronic waste products contain materials that cannot be recovered through your kerbside recycling or domestic waste bins. Items will be disassembled by Total Green Recycling, and components made of materials such as steel, copper, aluminium and plastic recycled into new products.

Accepted e-waste items include desktop computers and laptops, iPods, mobile phones, computer server units, LCD, Plasma and CRT monitors and televisions, printers, scanners, copiers, modems and network devices, keyboards, mice, joysticks, fax machines, circuit boards and other circuitry and electronic cables and wiring.

Cardboard

Bulk cardboard can be dropped off for recycling.

Polystyrene

Expanded Polystyrene can be dropped off for recycling into granules that are used to make other plastic products, diverting it from landfill.
