Residents are encouraged to support local businesses as the Gannawarra continues through the COVID-19 pandemic.
A recent increase in the number of confirmed locally acquired cases has seen a reduction in support for local businesses.
“The Gannawarra’s businesses have benefited from the influx of visitors to the area during the Christmas and New Year break, but with normal services resuming, the need to support our local businesses is important,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.
“However, like many communities across Victoria, residents are reluctant to get out and about at this time, which is impacting our hospitality and retail sectors.”
Royal Hotel Kerang manager, Rob Fisher described the current situation as “critical”, highlighting the lack of financial assistance currently available and many people taking a conservative approach to socialising.
“We would love to see more people out dining and taking advantage of the warmer weather especially when vaccination rates are so high,” Mr Fisher said.
Owner of Cohuna’s Bower Tavern, Jamie Williams has also seen a downturn in patronage over the last few weeks.
“With our outdoor dining areas available, it is the perfect time of year to take advantage of these facilities,” he said.
Council will continue to advocate on behalf of our local businesses for more financial support to assist them as they continue to navigate these uncertain times.
“We understand and sympathise with the issues currently impacting the hospitality sector locally and across the state. It is a difficult position that is creating serious hardship for many businesses,” Mayor Gillingham said.
“Council encourages residents to continue to support our local business owners by shopping local and taking advantage of our terrific hospitality and service businesses we have across the Gannawarra.”
