The West Tamar Council’s Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony was held on Wednesday 26th January 2022 from 8 am at the Tailrace Centre, with approximately 100 guests in attendance.

The central theme and message for Australia Day in 2022 is ‘Respect. Reflect. Celebrate.’ Which asks Australians to reflect on our history, its highs and its lows; respect the stories of others; and celebrate our nation, its achievements and most of all, its people.

The Australia Day Awards recognise outstanding contributions to the West Tamar Community, with presentations made to the 2022 winners in the following categories:

Citizen of the Year – Patricia Beams, who has meticulously maintained the beach in front of her Gravelly Beach home for over 50 years, voluntarily for the enjoyment of others. Young Citizen of the Year – Chloe White, our first ever Youth Mayor in 2021, Youth Advisory Council member, successful sportsperson and active community member. Young Sportsperson of the Year – Jake Birtwhistle, local triathlete achieving on the international stage including most recently representing Australia at the Tokyo Olympics. Community Event of the Year – Sustainable Living Festival, hosted and organised by Tamar NRM and volunteers, in October 2021 at the Windsor Community Precinct, this event showcased community, sustainability and a sense of working together to create a better future. Community Group of the Year – West Tamar Landcare Group, who formed in 1992 in response to a strong local interest in river management, weed control and land management practices. Tasmania‘s longest continuously active Landcare group who are still making an impact in the West Tamar today. Mayor’s Award – Mandy and Carl Cooper, who joined the Rotary Club of West Tamar in 2016, and the board in 2018, of which Carl is currently President. Mandy has been integral in setting up and running the Rotary Community Shop in Beauty Point and both have been significant drivers of fundraising for the club.

Mayor Christina Holmdahl said “The West Tamar Council Australia Day Awards recognise those in our community who have made outstanding contributions to our municipality. They represent hard work and selflessness, often over a number of years, and reflect true Australian values. On behalf of the West Tamar Council and everyone in our community, I thank them most sincerely for their contributions”.

We also welcomed 12 new citizens from Zimbabwe, India, United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand to our municipality, in an important part of the proceedings committing them to being active members of Australian society, joining thousands of other Australians who celebrated their citizenship on Australia Day.

“Citizenship is a life-long commitment to Australia’s shared values that make us proud to call ourselves Australian, including respect for the freedom and dignity of others, the rule of law, democracy and a fair go for all,” Mayor Holmdahl said.

“Each year we are privileged to welcome new Australians to our growing community and look forward to sharing in their culture, and paying tribute to the diversity of experiences which we all bring”.
