Burnie Pop-up Gallery 'Intersection'

In what will be a major coup for the Burnie community, the National Portrait Gallery will open its National Photographic Portrait Prize touring exhibition in Burnie on 4 March 2022.

Living Memory will be the first of three exhibitions presented at Intersection, Burnie’s new dynamic pop up gallery space in the former Dick Smith Electronics site in the CBD.

Bringing this award winning, nationally significant exhibition to the Burnie community has been a collaboration of Ten Days on the Island, the Burnie City Council, Business Northwest and Contemporary Arts/Research with financial support from Arts Tasmania.

Deputy Mayor Giovanna Simpson said “we are so very fortunate to have attracted an exhibition of this calibre right here in Burnie, in what will be an exclusively northwest affair.

The National Portrait Gallery don’t often leave Canberra and tour their exhibitions, so what a fantastic achievement to see Burnie attract such an event, one of only four venues nationally that will experience this amazing exhibition.  It is a testament to the community really, we know that culture and creativity represented through the arts, history, performance and stories are valued by our community.  Attracting an exhibition of this magnitude to our local area acknowledges that others see this too.”

The Living Memory exhibition is an exhibition of remarkable portraits of even more remarkable Australians.  The 2021 winner Drought Story by Sydney photographer Joel B. Pratley depicts a lone farmer immersed in a dust storm. The exhibition also includes Julian Kingma’s highly commended work Tom at the Drain, and Kristina Kraskov’s I’m Just a Suburban Fashionista, which won both the Art Handlers’ Award and the People’s Choice Award.

Living Memory will run at Intersection from 4 March until 27 March 2022.

In addition to the feature event, two additional exhibitions of local Artist will be on offer, the first of these being a collection of new contemporary abstract paintings titled Steel & Water by established, Burnie based Artist, Michael Muruste.  Represented by Colville Gallery in Hobart, Michael’s works are held in numerous public collections including in our own Burnie Regional Art Gallery permanent collection.  Michael’s paintings talk about the interplay of Industry and the Aquatic, Geometry and the Organic, The Resolved to the Right Now.

Steel & Water will run at Intersection from 5 April until 24 April 2022.

The third exhibition is an intriguing survey exhibition of Academic landscape painting by Launceston based Artist Anna Van Stralen. NatureNurture features Anna’s new paintings accompanied by works from collections across Tasmania. Anna is a UTAS Launceston Phd Visual Arts Candidate, who has notable history in Burnie. Her works reflect upon human architectural structures and the chaotic environments they inhabit.

NatureNurture will run at Intersection from 28 April until 15 May 2022.
