Vandals delay Splash Park opening

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor, Khal Asfour is furious at vandals who have caused thousands of dollars damage and delayed construction of a new Splash Park in Greenacre.

The wanton vandals have gone on a crime spree over recent months setting fire to newly erected buildings, dumping rubbish and asbestos on site and stole machinery.

“I’m fed up with these blatant acts of vandalism by gutless criminals,” Mayor Asfour said.

“We are trying to build a Splash Park so all locals can enjoy, but instead we have this disregard for property.

“I simply ask the question to those responsible: would you be doing this, if it was your own home?”

Mayor Asfour said the cost to the community was in the tens of thousands of dollars and had delayed the opening date of the project.

“I’m furious the construction site is continuously being targeted and I’m sure every rate payer would be just as angry as I am.”

He said the project had already presented some challenges as Council staff, like many other organisations, had been hit with Covid.

He warned vandals that their time was up, and he wouldn’t tolerate this sort of behaviour.

“Every time you enter a construction site to do these acts, you are not only delaying the project and causing extra costs, you are also putting your own safety at risk.”

Council will be increasing security and monitoring around the clock through CCTV cameras.

When the Splash Park opens, it will offer families a place to come together, have fun and keep cool.

It will feature Australia’s first mega splash four-dump bucket concept, as well as a network of dynamic water spray and play elements.

This new play space, estimated to open in the coming months, will also provide an open garden area with barbecues and family-sized picnic shelters, giving everyone easy access to weekend fun, close to home.
