Site preparation for construction on the Millmerran Pool rehabilitation project has begun.
Toowoomba Regional Council Environment and Community Services Committee Chair Cr James O’Shea said Council was happy that headway could now be made for the facilities with contractors Taylor Builders starting on demolition and site clean-up.
“This is a big milestone for the project. There will be a lot of preparation required for the new pool and buildings and we’re looking forward to strong progress for the project over the coming months,” Cr O’Shea said.
“The designs for the new pool and buildings are being finalised as this work takes place. The community can get a sneak peek at what is planned with artist impressions now available on the project’s Your Say website page.
“With the new facility, Council is committed to bringing the building mural forward for the future.”
The mural, which includes ‘The Vanishing swimsuit’ on the building entry and change room wall, was commissioned as part of the historical trail through Millmerran in 1999, will need to be removed as part of the demolition.
“Due to the material the mural has been painted on, it has been assessed that it is unlikely to be removed in a way to avoid significant damage to the mural.” Cr O’Shea said.
“We understand the community is proud of the mural and the character it brings to the town and it’s place in the trail. Council will be ensuring it is recorded as a high-quality image and it will be included in the new building.
“We’re looking forward to the image being a feature of the new facilities and still a part of the building for years to come.”
The Don McPaul memorial signage for the grandstand is being cared for and will be returned to the new grandstands to continue to honour Mr McPaul and his outstanding work within the Millmerran Community.
Council will be continuing to provide updates for the project over the coming months as the design moves through final approvals ahead of construction starting.
