The next phase of construction works on the region’s newest adrenalin experience is set to commence with Western Downs Regional Council selecting the successful contractor to deliver the trailhead component of the project.
Boyds Bay Landscaping Pty Ltd has been awarded the construction of the trailheads. The trailhead construction package entails upgrading the existing day use areas and providing entry points to the trails.
Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Events and Regional Promotion Councillor Kylie Bourne said the awarding of the trailhead construction contracts signified an exciting milestone for the project.
“Council is excited to be delivering a brand-new adventure experience at the beautiful Bunya Mountains, which is going to provide a new opportunity to head outdoors and have some fun, while driving tourism in our region,” Cr Bourne said.
“Works on the trails have been progressing well, with a brief construction pause during the period of wet weather in December. Works have recommenced after the New Year and it’s great to see the next package of works about to commence with the appointment of reputable Boyds Bay Landscaping to deliver the public-facing entry points to the trails.
“Boyds Bay delivered several of our landscaping projects under our COVID-19 Package and we are excited to see the same high standard of work delivered as part of our Russell Park Mountain Bike trails.”
This project will include four trailheads at the existing Rifle Bird Park (Bunya Avenue), Fishers Lookout, Russell Park, and Munro’s Camp. These trailheads will include trail signage and bike and hiker hygiene stations to protect this unique environment.
The Russell Park trailhead will also feature a range of new features including new picnic settings, seating, parking, landscaping, walking track connections, and eco-friendly amenities.
Cr Bourne said the trailheads would be the perfect place to stop, rest and meet with friends while supporting riders visiting the trails.
“The Bunya Mountains is a fantastic natural drawcard with significant cultural heritage, and it’s been fantastic working with the community and local indigenous groups on the designs,” she said.
“Once complete, the project will feature 28 kilometres of mountain biking trails, including five dedicated one-way loops and two dual direction link trail, offering something more for visitors and encouraging more people to visit the region.
“Works on the trailheads are expected to commence in February and I thank the community for its patience as we complete this wonderful project.”
The Russell Park Mountain Bike Trails Project is being delivered in partnership with the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
