Waste facility rehabilitations support environmental sustainability

More than $480,000 has been invested into rehabilitating waste facilities across the Central Highlands to limit future environmental impacts.
As part of the 2021–22 capital works program, Central Highlands Regional Council has completed drainage upgrades at the Capella Resource Recovery Centre and rehabilitation works at the former Bluff Landfill and old Bogantungan Resource Recovery Centre.
‘The main objective of rehabilitation is to return the site to a safe, stable, sustainable condition that supports future land use,’ General Manager John McDougall said.
‘By putting a layer of soil, synthetic materials and gas collection pipes over the whole landfill we seal it off from the environment and can then actively revegetate the area.
This work is also part of council’s obligations under its environmental authority from the Queensland Government.
‘Rehabilitation is a long-term project, often with a timeline of 30 years or more,’ Mr McDougall said.
‘Over this time, council works with the state government to meet strict environmental standards, which ensure that landfills don’t pollute ground water, streams and rivers, create erosion and don’t release harmful gas into the environment.’
Council will continue to implement actions under its regional waste facilities project, including site procurement works for a super resource recovery centre and developing a waste strategy.
