Redland Local Disaster Management Group stands up in response to intense rainfall

The Redland Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) moved to ‘Stand Up’ status this morning in response to intense rainfall across south-east Queensland, including Redlands Coast.

‘Stand Up’ means that Redland City Council and emergency management officers and resources are mobilised and operational activities have commenced across the city.

This includes operating the Local Disaster Coordination Centre, based at Council’s South Street, Cleveland, Depot. This is also one of Council’s sandbagging sites.

Areas of heavy rain are expected to persist until Sunday.

On Redlands Coast, many catchments are now saturated and there is an increased risk of dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding and even landslides.

A number of local roads are closed due to flooding and residents are urged to avoid these areas. This includes:

Allan Day Drive – Wellington Point Pitt Road, Nelson Road, Tulloch Drive and Redgrove Avenue – Birkdale/Wellington Pont Avalon Road, Sheldon Mary Street, Birkdale Rickertt Road – Ransome/Thorneside Collingwood Road – Birkdale

Occupants saved from floodwaters

Occupants of two separate vehicles have been saved from flood water and driving through flooded roads yesterday.

This occurred on Mary Pleasant Drive, Birkdale and Avalon Road, Sheldon.

Remember, if it’s flooded, forget it.

A split second poor decision to risk driving through flooded waters, even in metropolitan areas, can be fatal.

Stormwater manholes lifting

A number of stormwater manholes have lifted across the city.

They are designed to do this when there is excessive water pressure going through the system.

Drive to conditions and be aware of this issue.

Redland City Council crews have worked overnight and continue today to replace the lids or make safe the area through tiger meshing.

Sandbags

Sandbagging stations across the city have been extended until 6pm tomorrow, Sunday 27 February.

Thousands of sandbags have been given out across Redlands Coast today and yesterday.

This morning alone, from 7am-10am, more than 1000 sandbags were provided from Council’s Cleveland South Street depot.

More than 1000 were also provided yesterday from the South Street depot.

Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it’s flooded, forget it. Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm. Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
