‘Watch and Act’ alerts for Oakey and Jondaryan

Residents in Oakey have been issued with a ‘Watch and Act’ emergency alert today and should not be alarmed at this time.
Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) Chair Paul Antonio said this was more of a precautionary approach and was not from the dam overflow but is the result of ongoing rain throughout the Region.
“We’ve received substantial rainfall over the past few days and with the river and creek levels rising, residents in Oakey can expect to receive water in their yards,” Mayor Antonio said.
“Can I reassure residents not to be alarmed as the flood modelling does not indicate the water will rise above flood boards, however, we know the weather can be unpredictable and we don’t take risks so want to ensure our community is well-informed.
“While the flood models don’t show any increased flood risk, we have updated the Disaster Dashboard website with flood modelling mapping to give residents an idea of what to expect. Using this modelling, residents are able to enter their property details and get flood modelling on where the water levels may rise to.
“We’re not advising residents to evacuate at this point however, we’ve been working with the local aged care facility, who have made the decision to evacuate themselves and have been supporting them with transport for equipment.
“Residents in the Jondaryan area will also have received a ‘Watch and Act’ emergency alert today and our message for those residents is the same for residents in Oakey – remain calm and stay updated on our Disaster Dashboard.
“We know there’s been flooding in the past and residents will be understandably nervous about the situation but our team is monitoring the situation and will continue to keep you updated as events unfold.
“To assist, we’ve also opened the Oakey Cultural Centre (68 Campbell St) as an assembly point for residents to gather or for travellers to come for a hot drink.”
