South Terrace upgrade continues

The City of Fremantle’s improvements to South Terrace in South Fremantle are continuing, with work starting this week to resurface the road between Jenkin Street and Douro Road.

The old road surface will be replaced with new smoother and quieter asphalt, with the old road base to be recycled for use in other projects like car parks, footpaths and cycle lanes.

In addition, the City will reconfigure the intersections along South Terrace to improve the sight lines for vehicles exiting the side streets and improve pedestrian access by installing four new informal crossings and upgrading two existing crossings.

The City will also continue to explore opportunities for more tree planting and shade. Work includes arrangements for the existing tree pits along the road to be widened, and some parking will be reconfigured to allow for the planting of more street trees.

To minimise disruption to businesses and residents the road resurfacing works will be carried out between 5–11pm until Thursday 3 March.

South Terrace will be closed to traffic in both directions during these hours, with detours and traffic management in place. The road will be open to traffic for the rest of the day.

The additional works, which will at times require the closure of one lane, are due to be completed by 14 March.  

The City of Fremantle is progressively upgrading South Terrace in South Fremantle, with the aim of slowing the traffic and making it a more pedestrian-friendly space.

In December last year the City completed the second of six raised ‘nodes’ along the popular café and dining strip at Jenkin Street.

Four of the temporary speed cushions in the area were replaced with a single raised platform, which was paved with red asphalt and painted with a colourful ‘sunburst’ design to alert motorists they’re entering a shared space and encourage them to slow down.

The works also included narrowing the roadway to make it safer to cross the street and create more space for pedestrians, alfresco dining, new street furniture and trees.

The City of Fremantle’s first streetscape enhancement along South Terrace, at the intersections of Little Lefroy Lane and Sydney Street, was completed in 2018.

Other nodes planned for the intersections of Scott Street, Charles Street, Nelson Street and Orient Street are subject to future budget allocations. The temporary speed cushions along South Terrace will be progressively removed as each node is completed.
