The City is improving accessibility in the Wanneroo town centre with the installation of a new Changing Place facility that opened this month.

Located next to the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre, the accessible changing facility is equipped with toilet and changing amenities suitable for people with high support needs and those who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

Wanneroo Deputy Mayor Brett Treby said the City had already received positive feedback from community members who had used the Changing Place facility.

“There are more than 6,500 people with disability in the City of Wanneroo who require some sort of support in their day-to-day lives,” he said.

“For some residents, this means they need the assistance of a carer for everyday activities like using the toilet or changing, and our new Changing Place facility is equipped for just this purpose.

“We are very proud to deliver this facility in line with our commitment to creating a City where people feel included, valued and welcomed with facilities and activities for all.”

The facility includes a ceiling track hoist system, a height adjustable adult-sized change table, an automatic door and privacy screens.

The project also included the realignment of the brick pathways leading to the Changing Place facility and provision of an ACROD parking bay along Dundebar Road.

“This facility will improve access to the town centre, including the library, Wanneroo Central and the Civic Centre, for many local residents and visitors,” Deputy Mayor Treby said.

“We are grateful to have received $235,000 from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program to fund the project.”

Dean Smith, Senator for Perth’s northern suburbs, said getting shovels in the ground on local projects was important for maintaining jobs and economic growth.

“I am excited to announce funding allocations have been made for Phase 2 of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, which include a Changing Place facility for the City of Wanneroo,” Senator Smith said.

“The Australian Government is continuing to work closely with the councils and communities they serve, delivering the funding needed to create jobs, economic stimulus and road and community infrastructure that will benefit growing communities.

“It also means communities will benefit from key infrastructure projects, and lasting safety and access improvements on our roads, that will have a real impact on the day-to-day lives of residents.”

Also underway to improve accessibility in the Wanneroo town centre, thanks to Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program funding, are accessible parking upgrades at Wanneroo Aquamotion and the Wanneroo Community Centre, and a refurbishment of change room and toilet facilities, including a Universal Access Toilet, in the Hydropool area at Wanneroo Aquamotion.
