Historic moment for Gemfields sport and recreation facilities

After more than 50 years, Anakie’s beloved tennis court is being upgraded from a grass field to a multipurpose sporting facility.

Community excitement is at an all-time high with the concrete slab now laid and line markings and nets coming in late March 2022.

‘We are already talking about the facility being used as an outdoor movie venue as well as holding tennis competitions, netball and basketball,’ said Gemfields local Josie Carew.

‘The area is so large some people want to get their roller skates out too. The kids have already had a wonderful time on their scooters and bikes within the safety of the fenced area.

‘We are all so excited to finally see a tennis court that doesn’t require mowing, spraying and maintaining.’

The Anakie tennis court is one of three sport and recreation projects planned in the Gemfields as part of the Central Highlands Regional Council 2021-2022 capital works budget.

These upgrades also include the highly-anticipated Sapphire skate park and upgrades to the Rubyvale Flats Park amenities.

‘Recreation spaces in the Gemfields are receiving a complete makeover with the upgraded multipurpose court and barbeque, and a drinking fountain and shade shelters being added to Sapphire skate park,’ said General Manager Communities John McDougall.

‘By the end of this month we hope to see residents reaping the benefit of more than $495,000 worth of upgrades completed.

‘Community members should also keep their eye out at Roy Day Park for the construction of a new multipurpose building set to begin by 30 June 2022.’
