We can all play a critical role in providing for the welfare of cats and dogs that are sold or rehomed in NSW.
From 1 July 2019, any person advertising kittens, cats, puppies or dogs for sale or to give away in NSW needs to include an identification number in their advertisement. The identification number can be one or more of the following:
A microchip number; OR A breeder identification number; OR A rehoming organisation number. These advertising requirements apply to all advertisements, including those in newspapers, posters, community notice boards, social media, all forms of online advertising including public advertisements on websites such as Trading Post, Gumtree, eBay etc.
The requirements enable buyers to have the ability to conduct further research and make an informed decision prior to purchasing an animal. It also helps to promote responsible cat and dog breeding and selling, and to enable authorities to enforce animal welfare laws.
