The stories behind some of the region’s most talented creatives are being celebrated in ‘chapter two’ of a popular Council initiative which explores the vibrant arts and culture community in the Western Downs.

‘10 Artists’ uses videography and photography to capture the inspiration and passion behind some of the region’s best artists, offering a virtual platform for the arts community to expand their audience.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said the project was about celebrating the great talents in our community and exploring their lives through their art.

“It’s the people that make it here in the Western Downs and this project is about uncovering our talented creatives and sharing their passion with the wider community,” Cr Maguire said.

“Council is focused on creating active, vibrant communities and this project is a fun, interactive way to support the arts and cultural community we have here in the region and raise the profile of these talented individuals.”

The artists featured include Bill Perry, Guy Breay, Kay Joyce, Kristen Flynn, Leigh Nicholson, Megg Cullen, Meg Stevenson, Sharlene Smith, Sonia Miers and Tracey Irvine.

Each video runs for 1-2 minutes and gives an insight into the creative lives of each artist, captured by videographers Geordie Lillis and Rachel Siegur.

Bunya Mountains resident and featured artist Kay Joyce said the project offered an opportunity for the community to gain insight into the lives of our local artists while inspiring others to embrace their creative side.

“Programs such as this showcase to the arts community that their art practice is valued, while providing others who are thinking of engaging in an artistic pursuit, that their community welcomes them, their talent and their contribution,” Mrs Joyce said.

“In this way, the local arts community continues to thrive and add to the overall amenity of life for all residents and visitors to the region.”

The videos will be shared on Council’s social media channels starting March 2022 and hosted on the online Western Downs Arts website, promoting the arts community moving forward.

The 10 Artists: Chapter Two project will also feature in its own exhibition in opening 13 May 2022 at Dogwood Crossing, Miles.
