As more rain falls across the Region today, Toowoomba Regional Council has ensured its prepared to respond, if and when required.
Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) had moved to Lean Forward status to monitor the conditions.
“The LDMG is coordinating with relevant emergency services and will monitor advice and information from the State Disaster Coordination Centre and the Bureau of Meteorology,” Mayor Antonio said.
“Due to the large amount of rainfall we’ve had this year already, our ground remains saturated which means any extra rainfall will now build up, rather than soaking into the ground.
“As a result of this, we expect a large amount of roads will be flooded and with more rain forecast today, the need to be careful on the road is heightened.
“Please obey the signage. It’s impossible for Council to sign every defect and danger on the roads so be alert and drive to the conditions.
“I cannot stress this highly enough – if it’s flooded, forget it.
“The last thing we want is any further tragedies, so please be extra careful if you need to travel and even reassess whether you need to be on the roads in the first place.
“As we continue to monitor the situation, I would like to thank the emergency services who are doing an incredible job rescuing residents in flood water.
“Our top priority is to ensure all residents are safe and well-informed about the potential dangers from possible flood waters. It is better to err on the side of caution. Please keep away from flood water.
“Property owners who need assistance with flooding at their residence are advised to contact the State Emergency Service on 132 500, including for the provision of sandbags.
“Motorists are reminded to heed the simple message, ‘If it’s flooded, forget it’. Please observe any warning signs and drive to the conditions, however not every hazard will be signposted.
In a life-threatening emergency call 000 and for emergency flood or storm assistance, call the State Emergency Service on 132 500.
