Bankstown Arts Centre will be buzzing with art, music, poetry and more, when it hosts the NEXUS Youth Arts Festival this weekend.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said the festival, held on Saturday 9 April, will showcase young talent from Canterbury-Bankstown and beyond.

“We’re excited to show off the talents of our young people with everyone,” Mayor Asfour said.

Local singer and guitarist, Van Nguyen, will be one of several performers and believes the festival it is a great opportunity for young people.

“Events like this give young people the chance to let down their hair and express themselves,” said the Riverwood local.

“It’s also a great starting point for aspiring musicians.”

He said the Bankstown Arts Centre gave him the chance to make his debut performance a couple of years ago.

“And that gave me the confidence to start booking my own gigs."

Performers at NEXUS include DJs, local musicians, Bankstown Poetry Slam and street dance crew Hybrid Formz. Exhibitions include Juxta Jam, where DJs will mix live sound with images created by 46 artists.

A major highlight will be a special performance by BINDI BOSSES, a unique group of young South Asian women whose dance blends traditional Indian classical dance with dance from other cultures, including First Nations.

NEXUS is free and family friendly. As well as exhibitions and performers, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to explore your own creativity.

You can try your hand at printmaking, badgemaking or creating poetry. There’s even a hula hooping workshop.

NEXUS takes place on Saturday 9 April from 3-8pm at the Bankstown Arts Centre and is FREE to attend. You can register for the workshops ahead of time and find more information at cb.city/nexus
