As part of the continuation of the Moree Town Centre Beautification project, a series of trialled amenity concepts and upgrades is to take place over four weeks from mid-April on Heber and Balo Streets.
The feedback gathered from the community will help determine how to best move forward with facelifting both streets while improving pedestrian safety.
Mayor Mark Johnson said the proposed work will be positive for Moree’s CBD while calming traffic on both streets.
“An idea being trialled is installing an olive tree–lined centre island on Heber Street, between Balo Street and Roslyn Lane”, said Mayor Johnson.
“Along with improving the visual aesthetics of the area and offering extra shading during our hot days, this new traffic island will also discourage large vehicles from entering the CBD.”
“Additional traffic blisters will be trialled at the intersection of Balo and Gwydir Streets, making pedestrian crossing on Balo Street safer”, said Mayor Johnson.
“The blisters being placed on the corner of Balo and Gwydir Street will replicate the shape of the kerb in front of the Shell service station, further deterring heavy vehicles from travelling into Moree’s CBD.”
Mayor Johnson said options to increase shading on Balo Street are also being explored.
“Funding from the NSW Government’s Your High Street program will allow Council to construct new pergolas throughout the CBD and install water misters on existing pergolas”, said Mayor Johnson.
“The grant funding will also be used to construct a military-themed monument adjacent to the Moree Memorial Hall.”
“The Your High Street funding has been provided to Council to be used specifically in the CBD section of Balo Street to aid with cooling down the main street and to encourage the community to shop locally all year round”, added Mayor Johnson.
Council worked in consultation with the Moree Chamber of Commerce, Urban Advisory Committee and Local Traffic Committee to help identify which key areas should be trialled and upgraded during this period of the Moree Town Centre Beautification project. All organisations have endorsed the proposed plans.
Additional funding for the project has been supplied thanks to Phase Two of the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program.
“Over the next few weeks, we’re going to measure the effectiveness of these concepts with the aim of making the Moree CBD more aesthetically pleasing”, said Mayor Johnson.
Council is asking for community feedback for these concepts and upgrades.
