Fremantle celebrates Youth Week WA

Youth Week WA (8–16 April 2022) is shaping up to be an exciting time for local young people with a range of events and activities planned across the City of Fremantle.

Co-designed by the Fremantle Youth Network, the City’s flagship Youth Week event next week will bring a whole heap of fun to the Esplanade Youth Plaza.

Held on Wednesday 13 April from 1–6pm, young people can take part in free scooter, skateboarding, parkour and circus workshops while listening to an unbeatable lineup of youth performers.

Throughout the week, the City has also programmed additional coaching workshops across BMX, scooter, parkour and skateboarding and a Mindfulness Movement meditation session to celebrate Youth Week WA.

Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said this year’s Youth Week WA theme ‘Courage to Change’ aimed to empower and encourage young people aged 10–25 years to form their own opinions, shape decision-making and enact change.

“Fremantle Council has always been highly committed to making Freo a youth-friendly city and values the voices of our younger residents, who are so critical in shaping and safeguarding the long-term future of our community,” Mayor Fitzhardinge said.

“Our Fremantle Youth Network comes together every month to discuss current issues, ideas, causes and campaigns. Their input will be particularly vital this year when we have some big conversations about Freo’s future to guide our upcoming Strategic Community Plan. 

“Of course, the Fremantle Youth Network has been instrumental in helping to plan this year’s youth week program and I look forward to seeing what they’ve come up with!”

Fremantle Youth Network members Hazel Dortch, Milo Watson and Caspian Rowe said they were incredibly excited for people to see the awesome line-up of young buskers.

“It’s going to be a great event for the community, and a really nice way for young people to meet each other and hopefully make friends and new connections,” Caspian said.

“Youth Week is such a great opportunity for young people to connect and share their voices, and it’s up to us on the Fremantle Youth network to listen and learn about what they want for Freo and help develop this,” Milo said.
