Construction is starting on the $6.4 million Millmerran pool reconstruction project.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said he was pleased to join the construction milestone. (Thursday, April 21, 2022)

“Council is looking forward to delivering the new facility for the Millmerran community to use and enjoy,” Mayor Antonio said.

“The start of work marks an exciting new chapter for the Millmerran community.

“The facilities have been designed to serve well into the future and provide greater access for all members of the public.

“The Millmerran pool is a popular recreation and meeting venue and also serves as an important facility that encourages residents to lead heathy and active lifestyles.”

TRC Environment and Community Services Committee Chair Cr James O’Shea said the design for the 50 metre, six lane pool, with new change rooms and recreational waterplay options, was based on feedback provided from the community during late 2020.

“We thank the community for their patience with the complexity of this project,” Cr O’Shea said.

“Moving from what at first was expected to be major repairs to a full reconstruction of the pool has not been a simple task. It is great that we are at this stage today and a step closer to the new facilities.

“We know Millmerran is keen to take a dip and we will continue to closely manage the construction and commissioning process to minimise delays and have the pool available as soon as practical.

“We anticipate the pool will remain closed until early 2023, weather permitting. This is slightly earlier than our original timeframe. We will continue to keep the community updated.”

Cr O’Shea said the mural from the old change rooms had been successfully relocated to the Millmerran Historical Society.

He said the slice of history contained in the three wall panels, including ‘The Vanishing Swimsuit’, was commissioned as part of the historical trail through Millmerran in 1999. This was removed in March.

“While the original mural can be enjoyed at the Millmerran Museum, it has been recorded in a high-quality image and will be incorporated into the new building, acknowledging the history of the pool,” Cr O’Shea said.

Construction of the new pool will be completed by specialist pool facility building firm, Taylor Builders.
