The Charters Towers community will join with the rest of Australia to commemorate ANZAC Day on Monday, 25 April, 2022.
Commemorations commence at 5:50am with a Dawn Service to be held at the War Memorial Cemetery located to the north of Charters Towers on the Lynd Highway followed by a 9 am Commemoration March and Commemoration Ceremony from Mosman Street to Gill Street Cenotaph.
Mayor Frank Beveridge is encouraging Individuals and families to line the march route to acknowledge the marchers as they pass by.
“There will be ample assembly space in designated areas surrounding the Cenotaph and there will be an opportunity for members of the public to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph at the appropriate time during the service.
“Intending wreath layers are requested to email [email protected] to advise their intentions to do so. There will be designated areas for wreath layers so your emailed advice will assist the organisers”, says Mayor Frank Beveridge.
The Mayor is also urging motorists to be mindful this year. “It has been observed in past years that vehicles parked in Gill Street take up valuable street space and cause obstruction for both marchers and the viewing public.
“Please be mindful that Gill Street between Mosman Street and Boundary Street will be closed off to all traffic from 6am, any cars that may be parked within these closed areas will not be able to be moved until well after the event” he says.
The ceremony areas at the Cemetery and Cenotaph in Gill Street are not undercover, those attending the service at either location are advised to bring a hat, a water bottle and an umbrella in light of the potential rain forecast on the day.
The below illustration shows the designated areas that will be set aside for the various groups surrounding the Cenotaph on ANZAC Day.
Council is encouraging those unable to attend one of this year’s commemorative events to ‘Light up the Dawn’ at their home.
“Lighting up the dawn allows for those isolating or unable to attend one of the commemorative events to still participate” says Mayor Frank Beveridge.
Light up the Dawn involves standing at the end of your driveway, on your balcony or in your living room at 6am and observing a minute’s silence as the sun rises to remember all those who have served and sacrificed.
