The City of Fremantle has welcomed tomorrow’s opening of the brand new IGA supermarket in the heart of the city at Walyalup Koort.
The Fremantle IGA, located next door to Holey Moley and Strike Bowling in FOMO’s Tidal Lane, will be open seven days a week from 7am-10pm. Free parking is available in the FOMO multistorey car park when you spend $30 or more at IGA.
Store owner Hassan Waqar said the supermarket would employ around 40 staff, most of them Fremantle residents.
“We’re a local, family-owned business that aims to provide the highest quality products and produce to the Fremantle community,” Mr Waqar said.
“Our focus will always be to cater for the local community, whether it be stocking local suppliers or opening employment opportunities for the local residents.
“We hope to see you all at the store and ensure that all your grocery needs are looked after.”
The IGA is the latest addition to the FOMO food, retail and entertainment precinct, which is part of the $270 million redevelopment of Walyalup Koort undertaken by the City of Fremantle in partnership with Sirona Capital.
Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said it was great to have a supermarket back in the heart of Freo servicing inner city residents and workers.
“When the City joined with Sirona to redevelop Walyalup Koort the aim was to revitalise what had become a dead spot right in the middle of town by attracting lots more people to work, shop and have fun here,” Mayor Fitzhardinge said.
“Look around now and not only do we have the wonderful new Walyalup Civic Centre and library, there are also more than 1700 state government employees working in the offices above FOMO, plus all the fabulous food outlets and lots of fun to be had at Holey Moley, Strike Bowling and B. Lucky & Sons.
“The new IGA will further add to the activation of Walyalup Koort, attract even more people to the heart of the city and provide lots of job opportunities for Freo locals.”
Sirona Capital Director Tyler Mackey said they worked closely with the Freo community in developing the retail mix for the FOMO precinct.
“We wanted to find out exactly what people who live and work in town wanted to see, and a quality, independent supermarket offering local brands was top of the list,” Mr Mackey said.
“We’re delighted to have worked with the City of Fremantle in realising these plans and delivering an incredible IGA that is so important for the community at large.
“We can't wait to welcome locals and visitors down to do their shopping in our brand new IGA, right in the heart of Fremantle at FOMO Freo.”
The opening of the IGA supermarket, plus more new outlets FRY'D ice cream, Tokaido Sushi Train and King's Beer Garden, will be celebrated with a grand opening and FOMO Fiesta on Saturday 14 May.
The day will be packed with activities, including the chance to shoot hoops with Mitch Norton from the Perth Wildcats, giant light-up seesaws, a free FOMO train ride, live DJs and roaming entertainment.
