BASS HIGHWAY HEAVY VEHICLE DRIVERS REST AREA UPGRADE

The State Government have advised that work started on the Bass Highway Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Area between Nine Mile Road and Reynolds Road, Howth on Tuesday 19 April 2022.  The map shows the location of the project.

In late 2020, the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Strategy was released.  The Strategy identified several heavy vehicle driver rest area facilities requiring an upgrade to align with the Austroads Guidelines.  The facilities will provide locations for heavy vehicle drivers to undertake mandatory rest breaks across the state.  This will improve road safety as well as the efficiency of the road freight network through improved fatigue management.

Improved facilities will be provided at the Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Area in Howth, adjacent to the Howth weighbridge on the Bass Highway, allowing heavy vehicle drivers a safe place to check load security, rest and revive.  Works will also include installation of an amenities building, bus shelter and upgrade of the weighbridge area.

Timing

Construction started on 19 April 2022 and will be completed in October 2022.

The contractors will be working between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Friday, weather permitting.  Notice will be given in advance for any work outside these times.

How will the work affect you?

The work will involve the use of machinery, which generates some noise and vibrations.  Every effort will be made to minimise these impacts by turning off machinery and vehicles when not in use.

Traffic changes

During construction, there will be minimal changes to traffic conditions.  Single lane closures and a reduced speed limit will be in place.  Road users should allow up to five minutes extra travel time.  Please drive to speed limits and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs.

Heavy Vehicle radio communication channel

Operators of heavy vehicles can communicate with road maintenance site crews to help minimise wait times on radio channel UHF 25.
