A chance antique store discovery was partly the inspiration for a new video installation titled, Greetings from Eurasia, which is on display at Crows Nest Gallery until June 26, 2022.

Filipino-Australian artist Ben Tupas explores the concept of travel using curious objects that are viewed though a bi-cultural lens in his new work.

The celebration of multiculturalism was devised following Tupas’s discovery of a collection of post-World War II era, shell-carved curios that were on sale in a Toowoomba antique store.

Tupas draws directly from the objects in his video storytelling to invite viewers to consider travel from a different perspective.

Tupas selectively employs object, sound and light to suggest a foreign landscape, stereotypical travel destinations and opposing characters such as the local/tourist, driver/passenger and seller/buyer.

The work examines colonialism, consumerism and migration.

Residents are invited to discuss the exhibition with Ben Tupas from 11am on Sunday, June 12, 2022.
