Council celebrates collaborative approach to waste management
Alpine Shire 14 Jun 2022

Council is part of The Resource Recovery Collective – Hume, a collaborative procurement working group currently seeking Requests for Tender for long term waste and recycling management contracts.

The Request for Tender process aims to secure the Hume region’s capacity to collect and process waste and recyclables, ensuring the region is in line with the requirements of the Victorian Government’s circular economy policy and action plan, Recycling Victoria: a new economy.

Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said the Collective is an important example of the positive outcomes that can be achieved when organisations work together towards a common goal.

“It’s essential that we get the management of waste and recycling right, not simply for this generation, but for those who come after us,” she said.

“The Resource Recovery Collective seeks to ensure councils and alpine resorts from across the Hume region continue to lead the state in the diversion of waste from landfill, while supporting sustainable regional circular economy opportunities and economic growth.

“Councils and alpine resorts are coming together and reducing the number of individual procurements in the market, making it more competitive and reducing our reliance on international markets.

“This is a great thing for everyone involved, and for the communities we support.”

The Request for Tender covers long term contracts for the collection, transport and processing/disposal of comingled recycling, glass, food and garden organics (FOGO), and general waste.

Each of the twelve participating councils and alpine resorts have determined the services they require as part of this Request for Tender. Not every Participant is tendering for each waste stream or for every service associated with each stream.

Cr Nicholas said the procurement will help build resilience in the recycling sector and deliver cost effective, safe, innovative and reliable recycling services.

“Collaborative waste management procurements offer significant volumes of recyclables to the market, delivering economies of scale to councils and alpine resorts - this provides more certainty for industry and attracts more investment in infrastructure,” she said.

“Collaborative waste management procurements offer opportunities for leadership and drives strong environmental outcomes.

“It’s a very exciting step towards securing an economically and environmentally sustainable waste management approach for the North East and Goulburn Valley regions.”

The Request for Tender is now open. Tenderers are invited to submit a response for one or multiple Participants and service components.
