Commemorative mural officially unveiled on Vietnam Veterans’ Day

A special mural honouring local returned service men and women will be officially unveiled at the Emerald Town Hall this month.
Painted across the Anakie Street side of the building, the striking artwork captures the ANZAC spirit, featuring poppies and the Ode of Remembrance, and pays tribute to all Australians who have served their country.
The artwork was completed by talented CQ artists Bill and Luke Gannon, and was paid for by Central Highlands Regional Council in support of the Emerald RSL.
Noel Mallyon, President of the Emerald RSL Club, said he was very proud to see the mural in the vicinity of the town’s cenotaph.
‘It is very meaningful to the RSL to see the service and sacrifice of all Australian service men and women recognised in such an outstanding graphic portrayal,’ he said.
While the mural was finished in June, an official celebration of its completion will take place as part of the Vietnam Veterans’ Day commemorations on Thursday 18 August at 6.00 pm.
Mayor Kerry Hayes encouraged community members to join council and the Emerald RSL for the event.
‘On Vietnam Veterans’ Day we honour all veterans, whether they lost their lives during battle or since, returned home wounded or carry the physical and emotional scars of their service,’ he said.
‘We also pause to reflect the impact of service on veteran’s families. The new mural captures this same spirit, so we felt it was fitting to officially unveil it on the same day.’
There will be light refreshments and cake served in the town hall supper room following the formalities for anyone attending.
‘As the mural is owned by the community, it would be fantastic for our citizens to take part in its dedication and honour those who served,’ Mr Mallyon added.
‘We have such a strong community spirit around ANZAC Day and it would be great to also bring awareness to those who served in Vietnam.’
