The Region’s history is set to bring the Venus Gold Battery to life as part of the 150 Celebrations.
The Minjar Gold History & Heritage Fair will see the grounds of the Battery become come alive with activities, exhibitions, demonstrations and displays to suit all ages on Saturday, 27 August 2022.
Amongst other things, blacksmithing, wood turning, and unique tours of the Battery will provide an opportunity for the community and visitors alike to immerse themselves in our rich and diverse heritage.
Councillor Julie Mathews said the Venus Battery is the perfect venue for the Fair as it is such an integral part of the Region’s history.
“The heritage listed building was built in 1872 soon after gold was discovered in Charters Towers and it stands today as an icon of historical significance,” said Cr Matthews.
Council is pleased to acknowledge Minjar Gold as the naming rights sponsor of the event, which is fitting due to the Region’s vast gold mining history.
The Minjar Gold History & Heritage Fair is a major event on Council’s event calendar this year, and it is a great opportunity to celebrate our history, in particular our gold mining heritage, and the large influence it had on our Region’s growth and prosperity.
Gold will be a major focus of the day’s fun, with activities including gold panning and a Gold Rush, which will see participants searching for specially marked gold nuggets.
“The Ravenswood Gold Gold Rush will see entrants digging for gold in assigned plots, with the chance to win cool prizes for those who are lucky enough to find the specially marked nuggets.
“To partake in the Gold Rush, those interested will need to purchase Miner’s Rights which will grant them a special mining licence, as well as being assigned a mining plot.
“Miner’s Rights will be available at a cost of $10 each, and can be purchased from Monday, 15 August 2022. Spaces are limited, so those wanting to get involved should get in quick,” Cr Mathews said.
Other activities on the day will include family friendly entertainment, such as live music, markets, and bush poetry, making it a great day out for the entire family.
Council is also calling on artisans, stall holders, food vendors or anyone who wants to display artefacts who feel they can value add to this this event and would like to be involved to email [email protected] or phone Council on 07 4761 5300.
