Albany representation has triumphed at the 2022 Cinesnaps Short Film Competition in Busselton as they turned the theme of ‘space’ into creative expressions of film.
Five local students from Great Southern Grammar and their dedicated teacher took home a collective four awards across three independent films.
The Year 7-9 category was overrun with local Albany talent as Edward Baker, Maxwell Cruse and Thomas North were the runners-up with their film The W Files.
Colin Ferreira went onto win the same category with his film Mars... Maybe Not. The 3-5 minute films are a part of more than 41,000 films created for the Cinesnaps Short Film Competition since 2008.
Adding to the winning haul was Henry Baker who won the Year 10-12 category with his film Lemon and the Pelicans. Henry not only took home the honour, but was also awarded $1,000 prize money.
Great Southern Grammar Media Studies Teacher Katie Gunning’s dedication and support of her students won her the 2022 Cinesnaps Champion Teacher award.
Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington said the talent of Albany film makers goes beyond the bounds of the Great Southern. “This is an unbelievable achievement for our local young filmmakers whose success in the South West is the result of hard work, passion and commitment to their craft,” Mayor Wellington said.
“Albany’s connection with CinefestOz is something we are incredibly proud of. It gives our local film industry an outlet and an opportunity to thrive both locally and outside the region.”
Great Southern Grammar Principal Mark Sawle said he is thrilled with the student’s success at Cinesnaps again this year.
“Fostering our student’s creativity is a priority for our teaching staff as it encourages innovation, problem solving and motivates them to learn,” Mr Sawle said.
“Katie is a phenomenal educator and highly deserving of the Cinesnaps Champion Teacher. Her students thrive under her leadership and we are lucky to have her teaching our young people.
“I am proud of Henry, Edward, Maxwell, Thomas and Colin for their outstanding achievements at CinefestOz this year and congratulate all students that took part in Cinesnaps this year.”
