A triple treat exhibition program and free family activities herald Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery’s re-opening from Saturday, September 10, 2022.

Toowoomba Regional Council Library and Cultural Services portfolio leader Cr Tim McMahon said the re-opening was ideally timed to take advantage of the packed 73rd Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers program, which runs for the month of September.

Cr McMahon said the Gallery’s September exhibition schedule included a touring exhibition from the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) titled, Asia Pacific Contemporary: Three Decades of APT, which was a showcase of highlights from QAGOMA’s long-running Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art series of exhibitions.

“Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery is thrilled to join the touring schedule for an exhibition that profiles key moments from QAGOMA’s flagship exhibition series,” Cr McMahon said. (A satellite exhibition Asia Pacific Video will be on display at Rosalie Gallery until October 30.)

“Families and children can experience free, hands-on art-making activities when TRAG hosts APT10 Kids on Tour on behalf of QAGOMA from September 10 to October 2.

“Carnival time in Toowoomba means the subtle beauty of Ikebana, the traditional art of Japanese flower arrangement, will again feature in the Ikebana Display 2022 by the Toowoomba Ikebana Group.

“For more than 20 years, Toowoomba Sogetsu School has presented an annual Ikebana exhibition at the Gallery.

“This year, Netta Obst, Margaret Eiser and Dorothy Herrmann have created arrangements that respond to the season and environment, challenging themselves to combine new methods and materials to push the boundaries of the artform.

“Visitors also will see a selection of oil paintings drawn from the Gallery’s collections. The exhibition, Deep Impressions: European Landscapes from the Collections, features Australian Impressionist landscapes by Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin.”

This exhibition is on display until November 27.

Asia Pacific Contemporary: Three decades of APT

Audiences in the Toowoomba Region can experience highlights from the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art’s (QAGOMA) long-running Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) series of exhibitions, when Asia Pacific Contemporary: Three Decades of APT tours to Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery from September 10 to October 30, 2022.

QAGOMA Director Chris Saines said: Asia Pacific Contemporary: Three Decades of APT, featuring works of art commissioned or collected from APT1 (1993) through to APT9 (2018-19), would tour extensively across regional Queensland from December 2021 until July 2024.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to tour this exciting exhibition profiling key moments from the Gallery’s flagship exhibition series, which has contributed so much to our audience’s engagement with and understanding of contemporary art and culture in the region,” Mr Saines said.

“This diverse travelling exhibition also underscores the success of the APT’s role in the Gallery’s collection development strategies, highlighting internationally significant works by leading artists dating from the 1980s to the present day.”

Asia Pacific Contemporary: Three Decades of APT includes works by Heri Dono (Indonesia), Lee Wen (Singapore), Tracey Moffatt (Australia/United States), Lorraine Connelly-Northey (Waradgerie people, Australia), and Michel Tuffery (Aotearoa New Zealand).

“Since 1998, QAGOMA has collaborated with more than 290 Australian and international contemporary artists to produce engaging interactive projects, activities and publications for children and families,” Mr Saines said.
