Calling all young artists in Beaconsfield and surrounding areas! The Irene Phelps Art Competition ‘Exploring Gravity’ is now accepting submissions from youth aged 10 to 25 interested in showcasing their artistic talents through photography, drawing or painting.

The contest is designed to encourage budding artists and photographers to share their mental health and wellbeing stories through the theme ‘Exploring Gravity’, uncovering what weighs them down, what keeps them grounded, and what inspires them.

There are three categories accepting submissions:

Open - for those aged 16-25 living in regions with postcodes 7270, 7275 and 7276. High School – Grades 7-10 attending Exeter High School. Primary School – Grades 5-6 attending Beaconsfield or Exeter Primary Schools.

The competition is supported by the Irene Phelps Charitable Trust which has empowered young people living in Beaconsfield and the surrounding area through partnership with the West Tamar Council since 2015.

“The Irene Phelps Charitable Trust is committed to investing in the lives of our young people through many avenues including school holiday activities, the Beaconsfield Youth Centre, school programs, Free2B Girls, Driver Mentoring, Youth events and more”, West Tamar Council Mayor Christina Holmdahl said.

“Opportunities like this would not be possible without generous donations from local community groups and businesses, and I commend the hard work of our Youth Department.”

Competition entry is free and winners will be notified on Friday 25th November 2022 with artwork shown at a public exhibition in Beaconsfield on Saturday the 26th of November 2022. Each Category will have a 1st-3rd prize selected by an external panel of judges, a Mayor’s award on behalf of Irene Phelps, and a People’s Choice award, all receiving cash prizes.
