The City of Fremantle is encouraging residents to acknowledge their local heroes by nominating them for the 2023 Community Citizen of the Year Awards.
The awards recognise individuals and organisations making a notable contribution during the current year, or those who have given outstanding service over a number of years.
Outstanding contribution and community service includes areas such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, the environment, social inclusion or any other area that enhances community wellbeing.
Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said the awards presented a great opportunity to provide deserved recognition to our local champions.
“There are so many people around Fremantle who are going above and beyond for their community every day,” Mayor Fitzhardinge said.
“The work these people do – often in their own time and at their own expense – makes a real difference, and while often the feeling of contributing and connecting to others is a reward in itself, we want to highlight what a positive impact they can have on the community.
“If you know of someone who deserves to be acknowledged for their contribution towards making Freo a better place, make sure you nominate them for the Community Citizen of the Year Awards.”
The awards are split into four categories including Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year (65 years or over), Young Citizen of the Year (under 25 years) and the Active Citizenship Award (community group or event).
The 2022 Community Citizen of the Year was Hilton Precinct Group co-convenor Maureen Maher, who was recognised for her efforts in organising a host of events and activities designed to connect the Hilton community and enable a greater sense of wellbeing and belonging.
Fremantle’s Senior Citizen of the Year was Philip Lansell for his ongoing and unwavering support of the Fremantle Community Legal Centre, while the Young Citizen of the Year was Fremantle Youth Network member Allie Messenger.
PortCare Inc, under the leadership of Charlie Riccardo, was awarded the Active Citizenship Award for their efforts in supporting people in need, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2023 Community Citizen of the Year nominations close on Sunday 31 October.
