John Doyle Bridge Closure

Anzac Avenue Water Main Upgrade | Mareeba Shire Council wishes to advise residents of the planned closure of John Doyle Bridge from Monday, 19 September 2022 to Sunday, 25 September 2022. 

The project will affect traffic movements along Anzac Avenue with a one-off seven-day closure of the bridge. Pedestrian access will be maintained during the bridge closure.

The closure marks the start of a project to supply and install a new water main from the Herberton and Constance Street intersection, along Anzac Avenue through to Elisa Avenue. The entire project is expected to take nine months to complete.

The one-week closure, scheduled during the School Holidays, will ensure that the bridge can remain open during the remainder of the project.

Mayor Angela Toppin explains, “Council was presented with several options in the planning of the project. It was decided that a one-week closure would be less disruptive to the community, over the course of the works. Importantly, pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the entire project, including during the bridge closure.”

The replacement of failed asbestos cement pipes is one of the major projects under Council’s water strategy which will see the continued provision of safe drinking water to an estimated 11,000 residents. An allocation in the 2022/23 Capital Works program has been provided to replace the failed existing asbestos cement water mains throughout the Shire as Council’s strategy to address critical water issues across the Shire over the next 10 years.

“Like most rural and regional areas, much of the Shire’s urban drinking water supply infrastructure was installed in the 1950s to 1960s and is approaching the end of its useful life,” Mayor Toppin said.

The existing water main is a combination of asbestos cement (AC) and thin-walled white PVC. The current infrastructure will be decommissioned by filling the pipes with a concrete and grout mixture. The project will see the installation of 300mm PVC Supermain and Ductile iron cement lined pipes to replace the existing pipes.
