Exciting changes at the Walyalup Civic Centre as we try to trace time!

From today, the 15th of September, the ground floor of the Walyalup Civic Centre has finally become transformed into the Fremantle Local History Exhibition Space. To celebrate the event we have an exciting new exhibition showcasing famous early twentieth century photographer Izzy Orloff’s work.

While born in the Ukraine, trained in France, and had travelled the world, Izzy Orloff always returned to and was strongly connected to Fremantle. His most beloved photographs highlight Fremantle’s beaches, port and city life and thus provide an extraordinary historical snapshot of Fremantle. The City of Fremantle is very grateful to the State Library for sharing this captivating exhibition.  

The new Fremantle Local History Exhibition Space also has on display rare artefacts from our own Civic Collection, such as a grave head stone, horseshoe and glass marble that were discovered during an archaeological excavation on this site just before the construction of the Walyalup Civic Centre.  

The celebration of Fremantle’s history continues with the inspiring Fremantle Then and Now: Historical Panorama Project at the Maritime Museum which explores Fremantle through sweeping panoramas taken from the 1880s to modern day. The exhibition is open to the public from the 23rd of September.  

If you would like to play your own part in the celebration of Fremantle’s history, the City of Fremantle is collaborating with the Maritime Museum to offer two days in the Fremantle Local History Exhibition Space(from 9:30 – 4pm on both Wednesday the 19th October and Wednesday the 16th November) in which you can bring personal photographs of your own Fremantle memories to be scanned and uploaded to a community photo gallery that will be displayed alongside the Fremantle Then and Now: Historical Panorama Project.
