Mayoral Message - September 2022

19/09/2022

Yass Valley Mayor Allan McGrath with the Mayadunnage family

Change to Council meeting date

Council’s ordinary meeting has moved forward by a day to Wednesday, 21 September in light of the National Day of Mourning for Her Majesty The Queen. Members of the public can attend the meeting in person at the Council Chambers or watch online via this link. I join with others in the Yass Valley local government area in mourning the loss of Her Majesty and offer my condolences to the Royal Family.

Flying of the Aboriginal flag outside Yass Soldiers’ Memorial Hall

Following last month’s Council meeting, the Aboriginal flag will continue to be flown alongside the National flag outside Yass Soldiers’ Memorial Hall while further community consultation takes place. Council will consult with the Aboriginal Consultative Committee and Yass RSL Sub-Branch and will run an online survey for the broader community to complete.

STA Box Gallery opening

On Thursday, 15 September, I had the pleasure of officially opening the STA Box Gallery at Yass Valley Library. Renowned glass sculptor, Peter Crisp OAM, is the first artist to exhibit his works in the box for all library visitors to experience. The STA Box Gallery is a wonderful opportunity for more of our residents to experience internationally-acclaimed art without having to travel far, and I strongly recommend checking it out. Mr Crisp is just the first of many more exciting artists who will be showcased in the gallery box.

Citizenship Day

Congratulations to our nine new citizens who completed their ceremony and celebrated with cake among family and friends in the Council Chambers on Saturday morning. I hope you enjoy living in Yass Valley as much as I do.

Gundaroo Pub 150th anniversary

On the evening of Thursday, 15 September, I was pleased to be invited by the Gundaroo and District Historical Society to open their exhibition celebrating the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Gundaroo Pub. It was very well attended and clearly an occasion much appreciated by Gundaroo residents.
